Questions · Fonts

Can I give font files to my client?

Depends

Depends on the licence. Open-source fonts: yes. Subscription fonts and most paid desktop licences: no.

Handing over font files is where licences differ most. OFL fonts (most of Google Fonts) can be shared as long as the licence travels with them. Adobe Fonts, Envato Elements and Fontshare fonts can't be passed on. Creative Market's desktop licence limits the files to the licensed users on your receipt. MyFonts says flat images are fine but font files and files with embedded fonts are not.

Buying for a client (MyFonts)

“Be sure to enter your client's name or their company name into the 'License Information' field during the checkout process.”

What this means for client work

  • Default to delivering outlined artwork and flattened files. Every licence above allows that.
  • If the client needs to edit, the cleanest route is for the client to own the licence. MyFonts suggests entering the client's name as licence owner at checkout.
  • Write the font names and where to license them into your hand-off notes so the client's next designer doesn't have to guess.

FAQ

Can I send an editable InDesign or Word file with a commercial font embedded?

Usually not to an unlicensed client. Creative Market's desktop EULA allows editable documents only to other licensed users; MyFonts says you may not distribute files containing embedded fonts.

Can I buy a font licence on my client's behalf?

MyFonts tells you to enter the client's name or company in the licence information field at checkout, so the client is the licence owner.
